Going to wait to mention anything regarding the recent midterm election until next week. Take a breath and appreciate the space you are able to hold today. 

Today's episode features an interview with one of the premier hardcore groups of the Rio Grande Valley, Reinforce. The band is on the verge of releasing their first full-length album, Blemish, which is a milestone for the band, who've previously only released smaller collections of songs such as EPs. In this interview, I speak with Danny, Levi, and Pat--the vocalist, bassist, and guitarist from the group respectively--about the new album, their journey as a band, and as musicians themselves. It proved to be a very informative and revealing conversation, as members of the band have seen and experienced several waves and generations of goings-on in the Rio Grande Valley music scene, and wear those experiences on their sleeves. It was a privilege to speak so candidly with them for an evening, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

NOTES:
In short, today's episode has me a bit frustrated. I kept getting stuck reading headlines about the military's operations on the border aka my BACKYARD. It's surreal to say the least, and hard to think of as real, despite there being evidence to the fact. I featured excerpts from two different news stations on the show, one from a national outlet, Democracy now, and one from a local outlet, KRGV Channel 5, which I've been watching since I was a kid. The perspectives are very different. Where Democracy Now is a left-leaning operation, they also make sure to feature some of the more damning and volatile part of the news cycle, while our local station (one of 3) gathers a variety of opinions (from people who actually cross the border regularly, aka older latines who have a very complicated perspective on life in the rio grande valley. Nothing has ever been simple here since it was overtaken by white entrepreneurs in the 10s and 20s looking to establish a new tourist attraction on the border. Our culture is mixed, our experiences of prejudice are varied, with even poorer, less affluent whites experiencing prejudice and a seeming lack of privilege within the confines of mostly latine social circles. It's honestly not something I can break down into a blog post, it's so complicated...and infuriating. Growing up here, you don't think about how the Rio Grande Valley fits into the world picture. You don't realize how living on the border of a violently imperialist country means you never truly have control of your surroundings. The military can barge in on the whim of a raving racist rapist who--while your country may not have elected him president--is still able to rally massive support from his followers by simply echoing their violent rhetoric with his own little shit stain of flair. Case in point: there are currently 200 militia members mobilized and ready to invade the border with their guns, hunting gear, bait & tackle, whatever, all because of Donald Trump's fearmongering about the border. These assholes have the resources to gather weaponry and organize themselves in such a way that they can act as armed vigilantes to further whatever warped understanding of the world they have. That's terrifying. I understand the historical value of militias but in those days the militias were not aligned with the goverment, they were created to defend the people's (white ones mostly) right to autonomy should the government try and take that away. These days militias have been reduced to the playthings of entitled white men with money who fear people of color, believe women are beneath them, and think the president is their best fucking friend. Here we have the first official Blistering Listens & Strange Sounds Thank You episode dedicated and painstakingly curated for a Halloween audience, since Halloween lands on this coming Wednesday. Technically if you're reading this, that's tomorrow, so let that be noted. I'm really not looking forward to having my neighborhood filled with cars--making it impossible for me to park and get into my apartment, but you know what's worse than that? The US' delivery of military forces to the border, further militarizing an already militarized zone, in response to the incoming wave of Central-American refugees seeking shelter in the United States from the dangers of their homelands (which were orchestrated in large part by the United States). I honestly don't know what to say to a situation like this. The RGV will become a very tense place once again, no doubt we will also be filled to the brim with journalists from every publication imaginable spinning this story for their respective outlets' audiences. I don't know what will happen to the shelters who have been tending to incoming immigrants since 2014 when this new wave arrives. They'll need all of the volunteers they can get, and all of the supplies they can get. I'll be looking into ways to make myself useful in this time. I encourage you, reader/listener, to do the same. 

A note about some music I played in the show, namely Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells". I played a few minutes from side 1 of the entire piece, which consists of 48 minutes worth of musical wizardry. It's truly such a wild piece, I considered playing the entire thing for tonight's episode, but decided against it at the last minute. I recommend you listen to it, however, on your own time, as it is something that must be experienced. Especially if you're a horror fan, or even just a fan of the Exorcist.

Show Notes
This was an especially fun broadcast to put together. It's been a while since I've played mostly punk on the show, and I'll admit, this particular instance is not an uninspired one. If you listen to the show, you'll notice most of the people playing in the groups on the playlist are women, and cut from some kind of punk cloth. This is because I've been on the hunt for groups featuring women, lgbtq artists, and most importantly, people of color. I have found several groups with queer members and frontpersons, and plenty of unsung female heroes in the post-punk realm, but not very many groups from this realm featuring members of color. I tried looking a little closer to my own timeline and still have not found very many, the few groups in existence today have been found and are great and slowly getting their well-deserved attention, but still not quite what I'm looking for. I've felt so compelled to fill this gap myself--and I might sooner than later--but until then, my search will continue. The upside to constantly searching for something you don't find is that you come across a bunch of other things that you are thankful to have discovered, despite not knowing about them in the first place. I'm rambling as usual, but I've begun adding links to each artist name in the above tracklists so you can look them up easier, and below I've posted a link to the music video for the final track of the show, "Haru" by the Columbus, Ohio group, Didi. I think it's an incredibly beautiful song and I want the whole world to hear it/see it because the music video in particular seems to match the general air of whimsy and wonder that the song encapsulates. This episode is a good one, as usual. Less talking done though due to my car having some troubles and my needing to work on them immediately after the broadcast, which prompted me to do all my post-production work during the show. Sadly, the repairs did not help my car much. I'm pretty sad about that. But in other news, I heard about Kavanaugh later into Saturday (a surprising development in my social media-burnt life cycle) and it's not surprising at all that the people who currently make decisions for this country appointed a rapist to the Supreme Court, and not just because they've already done it once before (looking at you, Clarence Thomas), but because these senators and representatives were elected by people who voted with their interests in mind, people who exist in the same world you and I do, dear listener. It should go without saying that voting matters in every election, but this upcoming election in particular is of great importance to the future of our world as we know it (at least if you live in the US, though the US has so much imperial influence throughout the world, it will eventually get to you too, international listener.) Sure, politicians are all tools of the state and the machine etc etc etc, BUT there are very real differences between some of them. You're not voting for your best friend, you're voting for someone who can be held accountable for what their responsibilities are. Some politicians are receptive to citizens taking to the streets and demanding their futures and livelihoods. Some make change--take that fella who became DA in Philadelphia completely overturning their prison system, that's one hell of a radical move, and he's a fucking Democrat. Partisanship is all smoke and mirrors, I tell you! It's all about human rights and who truly cares about them. Some politicians, like a good chunk of the Senate Judiciary Committee (on either side of the "aisle"), couldn't care less about an issue if it doesn't affect their reelection. In Texas, my senators are Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, both of whom voted Kavanaugh into the Supreme Court. These men don't listen to citizens demanding change, they think they've got enough support from their vested interests (who have also had a hand in Texas' gerrymandering of districts no doubt) to stay put in their senate seats. What reason would they have in their minds to listen to anyone else? I hope voters in Texas give them a reason to feel fear. I hope voters across the country send shivers down all of their diabolical sitting politicians' spines, and pull the rug out from under them. It's the next best thing to a kick in the ass, which would land any good citizen brave enough to do so in jail for who knows how long, depending on their skin color or religion. Wow, I'm really rambling here. Okay, look--my point in all of this is that you--the listeners--NEED TO VOTE. I hope you've registered. The deadline to register in Texas is tomorrow. You can't do it online, please don't fall for that garbage. Find a voter registrar in your area (surely they're running around looking for you), or go to your local county's election office and get a form, fill it out, and voila, you're good to go. I was a voter registrar during the 2014 gubernatorial election and can personally confirm that this process is that damn easy. There's no excuse. If you think something needs to change, put your vote where your mouth is. Remember, the monster of a government that exists today--was created, which means it can certainly be destroyed and replaced. Much like broken car parts! UGH. Okay, I'm done ranting for now. I think I've had too many Ferrero Rocher chocolates this evening, honestly I'm just obsessed with them. So bad. Anyway, thanks for listening.
